JOB SUMMARY:

Under the general direction of the Laboratory Research Supervisor 1, responsible for the performance of organic analysis for the determination of xenobiotic residues in biological specimens. Responsible for participating in the update & development of analytical procedures, quality control procedures, & Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). THIS IS NOT AN H1B/J1 OPPORTUNITY. Candidate must be legally permitted to work in the United States and not subject to revocation. This is not a research position. The position is located in a diagnostic laboratory where quality control and assurance as well as meticulous working habits are essential.  

 

Budgeted Salary: Initial placement will be between $58,459.80/year and $74,169.60/year, commensurate with educational background and relevant working experience.

Qualifications/Experience:

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Ability to distinguish between colors. Stoop, bend, and lift supplies and equipment weighing up to 35 lbs. Ability to perform repetitive hand motions such as pipetting, grasping, uncapping, etc. Sit/work at a computer/workstation for extended periods of time.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT 

THIS IS NOT AN H1B/J1 OPPORTUNITY. Candidate must be legally permitted to work in the United States and not subject to revocation. This is not a research position. The position is located in a diagnostic laboratory where quality control and assurance as well as meticulous working habits are essential. Work Schedule: Monday- Friday; 8:00am- 5:00pm (Work schedule might be slightly different during the training period) Mandatory weekend and holiday rotation as needed. Restricted/Limited vacation during peak workload periods (i.e. Outbreaks, Fiscal Close, Audits Periods, etc.) Occasional travel to CAHFS branch laboratories, conferences, etc. Per the terms and agreements of the department's contracts and grants, the position requires signing of a Confidentiality Agreement or Non-Disclosure Agreement regarding testing and client information. All CAHFS employees must know and follow job safety procedures, attend required health and safety training, proactively promote safety at work, and promptly report actual and potential accidents and injuries. Must wear laboratory required/supplied PPE and participate in Health Surveillance Program. This position is subject to prophylactic vaccination for rabies, as well as medical surveillance procedures and review in accordance with Federal and State Laws and Regulations and University Policy. Tolerate strong odors and the sight of exposed animal tissues and blood products, and to handle/dispose of infectious materials. May, at times, work with or be in areas where biohazardous and chemical materials and infectious diseases are present. Specific hazards of the position are, but are not limited to salmonella, Listeria, E. coli, Campylobacter, hot acids, bases, ethers and other chemicals. QUALIFICATIONS

Required:

Master's degree in analytical chemistry or equivalent combination of educational background & experience in organic residue analyses using HPLC, MS & GC instrumentation to equate to a Master's degree. Knowledge of analytical chemistry & demonstrated skills to critically understand, interpret, & apply procedures for analysis of biological samples as described in literature and/or Standard Operating Procedures, including mathematical calculations, statistical analysis and application of these skills to computer software. Advanced skills in the operation of a wide range of computer-controlled analytical equipment including liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (LC-MS) and gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS) including maintenance and trouble-shooting of equipment to obtain maximum performance from instruments. Expertise in sample preparation techniques such as liquid-liquid & solid phase extraction, sample fortification, & matrix matching. Knowledge & skills to develop novel extraction and analysis approaches or modify described/ published analytical procedures to expand testing capabilities in a variety of test matrices under the requirements of an ISO 17025 accredited lab. Skills to prepare analytical reagents, solutions, controls & standards in a regulated environment following safe working practices and guidance/requirements for disposal of hazardous materials.  

Preferred

Advanced knowledge & skills to operate Thermo mass spectrometry instruments including triple quadrupole mass spectrometers (Quantum Ultra, Vantage, Quantiva, Altis), Thermo Orbitrap & linear ion-trap mass spectrometers, and Xcalibur software. Proficiency in the operation & maintenance of Agilent's GC-MS (gas chromatography mass spectrometry) systems using Chemstation software. Doctorate in analytical chemistry or equivalent combination of educational background & experience in organic residue analyses using HPLC, MS & GC instrumentation to equate to a doctoral degree. Experience in a high-throughput environment performing organic residue analyses with regulatory thresholds and familiarity with regulatory requirements and Association of Racing Chemists criteria for identification by mass spectrometry.
