Summary and Scope of Position:

Perform research and/or development as a technical expert and key member of the Bioanalytical group.  Support projects focused on identification of degradation products using HPLC/UPLC for the INTERCEPT Blood System platforms; generation and analysis of data and support assessment of unknown impurities by liquid chromatography. This is position requires the candidate to be on site, limited remote work.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Develop, validate and implement quantitative HPLC analysis of compounds from biological matrices for project advancement.
  • Independent ability to operate and troubleshoot HPLC (Agilent 1100, 1260 Infinity, Waters Alliance 2695 or equivalent).
  • Independent ability to design, execute, and analyze data from experiments or studies.
  • Note trends and aberrations in data, identify problems and suggest/conduct experiments to determine root cause and develop solutions.
  • Support other analytical methods and technologies for project advancement, that may include mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS).
  • Prepare, initiate and complete analytical method validation and reports.
  • Prepare, initiate and complete study protocols and reports for both GLP and R&D studies.
  • Act as Study Director for internal studies and when Cerus performs GLP studies as a Test Facility.
  • Act as Principal Investigator in designing, conducting and analyzing own experiments and, potentially, those performed at external test sites
  • Manage CRO including shipment, data analysis and reporting of final results, as needed.
  • Expected to maintain leading edge knowledge in primary field of expertise.
  • Participate on project teams providing contribution of ideas, developing of plans, execution of plans, and timely reporting of results.
  • Prepare and manipulate various blood products, including plasma, platelets and RBCs.
  • Must be willing to work with potent chemicals utilizing a glove box.
  • Maintain laboratory notebooks.
  • Maintain high level of professional expertise through familiarity with current scientific literature.
  • Contribute to project progress within his/her scientific discipline.
  • Design, initiate and manage off-site studies and /or projects.
  • May supervise lower-level scientific staff including training, development and performance management.
  • Perform other related duties as required. 

 



Qualifications/Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in a scientific discipline with a minimum of 11 years experience or Master’s degree in a scientific discipline with a minimum of 8 years experience.
  • Experience with analytical techniques including chromatography (RP, IEX, Affinity, Size exclusion), mass spectrometry (LC/MS/MS), extractions (solid phase, liquid-liquid, protein precipitation), radioactivity (14C, 3H and 35S) and spectroscopy (UV-VIS).
  • Experience with analytical instrumentation including HPLC, UV-VIS spectrophotometers, LSC.
  • Solid experience with related computer software.
  • Experience with biological matrices.
  • Working knowledge of DNA preparation (PCR), electrophoresis.
  • Working knowledge of blood bank practices.
  • Familiarity with GLP/GMP regulations and record keeping.
  • Proficient in writing reports, regulatory submissions and publications.
