Position:
TOXICOLOGY ANALYTICAL CHEMIST
(STAFF RESEARCH ASSOCIATE 3)

Description:
Under general direction, responsible for the performance of organic chemical analysis for the determination of toxicants in animal biological specimens, feeds and other source materials. This includes all required sample preparation, analysis, and data interpretation.
Responsible for the operation and maintenance of advanced analytical instrumentation such as chromatographs and mass spectrometers. Work cooperatively with other analysts in sharing access to instrumentation and other laboratory resources.
Responsible for management of the Toxicology dishwashing facility, including the hiring, training & scheduling of student dishwashers to ensure that the toxicology laboratory has a steady flow of clean glassware.
Responsible for modification of existing test procedures, with assistance from supervisors or other senior personnel, as needed to deal with novel sample types or to improve existing procedures.
Perform work as per quality assurance guidelines. Ensure that quality control requirements are met. Participate in writing and updating standard operating procedures and in quality assurance investigations and audits.
Follow all CAHFS safety requirements.
Qualifications/Experience:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Education/Experience:
-Master’s degree in chemistry or an equivalent combination of education and experience. -Experience working in a high production laboratory and in working efficiently to meet testing deadline and other client requirements.
Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):
- Knowledge of analytical chemistry and skill to critically understand, interpret, and perform techniques and procedures for analysis of biological and non-biological samples as described in the Standard Operating Procedures.- Knowledge of sample preparation techniques such as solid phase and liquid-liquid sample extraction, QuEChERS extraction, and matrix matching.- Skills in the operation and maintenance of a wide range of manual and computer- controlled analytical equipment including Gas and Liquid Chromatographs, Mass Spectrometers, UV Spec, etc.
- Knowledge of quality assurance and quality control practices used for chemical analysis.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Preferred Education/Experience:
-Experience working in a lab accredited to quality standards such as ISO, NELAP, or GLP.
-Experience in the organic chemical analysis of animal tissue and/or feed.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):
-Familiarity with literature sources of analytical procedures.
